Why a High-Quality Analog Compass is Dollar-for-Dollar Your Best Dive Gear Investment
I’ve been diving for nearly a decade, averaging between 100 to 200 dives each year in the Pacific Northwest and around the globe. Over that time, I’ve gone through a lot of dive equipment. Some gear has been lost to the ocean, some was disappointing in its performance, and other pieces simply broke or wore out under heavy use.
While I currently own plenty of equipment I am thrilled with, there is one humble instrument that has, dollar-for-dollar, been the absolute best gear investment I’ve ever made: my Suunto SK-7 underwater compass.
1,000+ Dives and Still Going Strong
I purchased this little unit with my very first set of dive gear somewhere around dive #40, right before taking my Rescue Diver course during my first year of diving. Over a thousand dives later, it’s still going strong!
It has traveled all across British Columbia, been passed around to hundreds of students during courses, tossed around gear bags, and just keeps ticking. It now resides in a custom bungee mount rather than its original wrist strap, but that’s about the only modification it has ever required. A $90 piece of gear that has logged upwards of 1,000 dives doesn't owe me a thing!
Why Underwater Compass Tilt Potential Matters
What makes a top-tier compass like the Suunto stand out is its extraordinary tilt tolerance (up to 30 degrees). Cheaper compasses freeze or lock up if you tilt your arm even slightly out of level. When swimming through currents, low visibility, or kelp beds, maintaining a perfectly level arm is nearly impossible. A generous tilt range means smooth, unhindered card rotation so you never have to second-guess your direction.
How to Read an Underwater Compass: Direct vs. Indirect Navigation
Understanding how to view your compass card is key to navigating confidently underwater without getting disoriented:
- Direct Reading (Top Window): Look straight down at the top rotating bezel window. Align the physical red lubber line with the center axis of your body, rotate the bezel until the double index marks frame the magnetic North arrow, and swim in the direction of the lubber line. This is ideal for surface navigation, setting initial bearings before descending, and quick visual checks.
- Indirect Reading (Side Window): Hold the compass directly at eye level and look through the side viewing window. Read the degree heading displayed in the window against the reference line. Indirect reading allows you to maintain head-up, horizontal trim and scan for marine life ahead while continuously tracking your precise numerical bearing.
Proper Body Position: Using Your Arm as a Lubber Line
The biggest cause of navigation errors underwater isn't compass drift—it's poor body positioning! If your compass is pointed 15 degrees to the left of your swimming direction, you will swim in circles even if the needle reads correct.
The Extension Technique for Perfect Dead Reckoning:
- Wear the compass on your non-dominant wrist (or extend it in both hands).
- Extend your arm straight out in front of you, bending your elbow at a 90-degree angle so your forearm aligns directly across your chest centerline.
- Sight over the top lubber line or through the side window along the extension of your arm, turning your entire body—not just your head or hand—to change headings.
- By keeping your forearm rigid and centered, your arm acts as a natural extended lubber line, keeping your fins aligned with your compass heading.
Mounting Styles: Bungee Mount vs. Traditional Wrist Strap
How you attach your compass to your arm or exposure suit makes a huge difference in convenience on deck and underwater:
- Traditional Wrist Strap: Features a ratcheting buckle or rubber strap. While simple and reliable over a bare wrist or 3mm wetsuit, traditional straps loosen as neoprene compresses at depth, causing the compass to slide around your wrist during deep dives.
- Bungee Mount (Modern Standard): Uses dual elastic shock cords wrapped around your forearm or back of hand. Bungees automatically depth-compensate as your suit compresses, keeping the instrument snug at all depths. They are far easier to don with thick drysuit gloves and allow quick mounting over heavy cold-water undergarments.
