I recently purchased the Suunto D5 and tried it out during my vacation in the Maldives. First things first, the dive computer is also meant to be worn as a watch. Though it is not what you could call a dress watch, I found the D5 to be very comfortable and easy to wear for any occasion. It is much lighter than the D6 I used to own and it will not hinder any of your activities.
The charger on the battery is good for at least 12 hours of diving and I have used it as watch for one full week with the power reserve going down only by 50%. The display is large and easy to read. It automatically dims when not in use and the watch functions are very convenient, without too many distractions.
As a dive computer, I found the D5 to be extremely user friendly, the menus and functions are organized intuitively and the buttons are easy to use, even underwater (I was not wearing any gloves), much easier than the D6. The color display is definitely a plus. It lets you get the information at a glance, without having to look so closely to the graphs. The alarms (vibrating and sound) are also perfect for grabbing your attention. I used the D5 to dive with Nitrox and the gas switch was effortless and easy. The log feature is also well presented.
I particularly enjoyed using the D5 paired with my mobile phone. Right out of the water, even between dives, I was able to consult the application and get a great deal of detailed information about my recent dive, including the location on the map which is quite neat.
The D5 is a superior dive computer that is convenient, easy to use and very performing. I would recommend to any recreational diver and even for some divemasters and instructors.
