Product Description

Welcome to a classic Vancouver Island diving adventure! This trip is an intensive, one-day immersion into the world’s best cold-water diving environment. The waters of British Columbia are known for a phenomenon called Polar Gigantism, where invertebrates grow to extraordinary sizes due to the cold, nutrient-rich currents.

This itinerary is specifically designed for the committed cold-water diver, providing access to two of Nanoose Bay’s most famous shore-accessible sites: Madrona Point and Tyee Cove.

The Reward: Giant Marine Life

While tropical diving offers brilliant colours, the Pacific Northwest offers drama, scale, and density of life. Over the two dives, we will be seeking out the region’s signature creatures:

  • Giant Pacific Octopus (GPO): The world’s largest octopus, frequently found in the rocky dens of both sites.
  • Wolf Eels: The charismatic, large, snake-like fish that often live in monogamous pairs within crevices. Tyee Cove is home to the famous resident, “Grandpa.”
  • Vibrant Invertebrates: Expect to see dense carpets of White Plumose Anemones, Sponges and countless Nudibranchs.
  • Sea lions: Encounter some playful sea lions during your dive at Madrona or Tyee Cove

The Schedule

Friday Before the trip -Gear sizing and check-out of rentals and load up for the journey.
6:45 AM Meet at Dive Store Be at the store ready to go on time so we are sure to catch the ferry
8:35 AM Ferry Outbound Crossing from Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to Nanaimo
10:45 AM Dive 1: Madrona Point Shore dive entry. Explore “The Maze” and the main wall. Search for Wolf Eels and Giant Pacific Octopus (GPO).
1:00 PM Surface Interval Transportation over to Tyee Cove and lunch
2:00 PM Dive 2: Tyee Cove Shore dive entry. Explore the two walls and sandy chute. Agreat opportunity to find the famous Wolf Eel (Grandpa)
4:00 PM Pack Up & Drive De-kitting, securing gear, and driving back to the Nanaimo ferry terminal.
6:20 PM Ferry Inbound Relaxed crossing back to the mainland.
8:45 PMArrive at Store Unload gear and complete the trip.

The Prerequisites 

  • Certification: Advanced Certified Divers ONLY.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 Cold Water Dives logged.
