Course overview

International Diving Centre is BC’s largest training facility in every respect. Learning from a professional facility will prepare you to work at any reputable PADI facility around the world. As a business that trains more divers than any other in BC, we are the best equipped to teach you to do the same. Success as a scuba diving instructor means more than being an effective teacher; it also requires exemplary customer service and a dedication to safety. We have developed a large diving community through the efforts of our extensive and diversified staff. Our Course Director, IDC Staff Instructors and the rest of our professional team are responsible for the success of International Diving Centre, the instructors we have trained and will be responsible for your success in the industry.

If you love diving and enjoy being around others as excited about it as you are then you should consider becoming a PADI instructor. Your first step in becoming a PADI Professional may have been becoming a PADI Divemaster, take those skills and build on them by learning how to teach a variety of recreational PADI courses.

PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors (OWSI) are highly sought after dive professionals the world over. Not only are PADI OWSIs capable as acting as Divemasters but they can certify new divers and help others continue their education with courses like the Advanced Open Water or Rescue Diver. OWSIs are also able to keep learning and growing as professionals by becoming Specialty Instructors in a variety of specialties.

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is made up of two parts – the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Most dive professionals complete the entire IDC and go on to attend an Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step to earn a PADI Instructor certification.

A PADI Divemaster who has been a certified diver for six months may enroll in the PADI Instructor Development Course. You also need:

  • At least 60 logged dives and 100 dives to attend an IE.
  • Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) training within the past 24 months.
  • A medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months

Key topics include:

  • PADI Standards and Procedures for courses you can teach with in water workshops
  • Learning, Instruction and the PADI System
  • Risk Management and Diver Safety
  • The Business of Diving and your role as an instructor
  • Marketing Diving and Sales Counselling

You also need to be an Emergency First Response Instructor, but you can earn this rating during your instructor training.
